The Trekker Bridle: Simple, Practical and Made for the Trail

Sep 22
4 min read

Sometimes the best pieces of horse gear are the ones that make life just that little bit easier.

That was the thinking behind our MPH Saddlery Trekker Bridle—a practical Biothane bridle designed for riders who want the convenience of being able to quickly remove their horse's bit without removing the bridle itself. Like our Endure Bridle, the Trekker is all about versatility. But there's one important difference between the two designs.

With the Endure Bridle, the whole bridle head clips on and off the halter.

With the Trekker Bridle, the bridle stays on and the bit itself clips on and off.

It's a simple distinction, but one that gives the Trekker its own place in our range.

Clip the Bit Off and You're Done

The defining feature of the Trekker is its clip-on, clip-off bit.

Rather than having to undo buckles or remove your horse's entire bridle when you stop, you can simply unclip the bit from either side. The rest of the bridle stays exactly where it is.

It's particularly handy when you've stopped during a long trail ride and want to give your horse a chance to relax, eat or drink without a bit in their mouth. Unclip the bit, and your horse can have their break. When you're ready to get going again, simply clip it back into place.

No swapping headgear. No juggling a separate halter and bridle. No completely dismantling your setup halfway through a ride.

Trekker vs Endure: What's the Difference?

We designed the Trekker and Endure Bridles for slightly different purposes, although there's naturally plenty of crossover between the two.

The Endure Bridle was designed particularly with endurance competition in mind. Its entire bridle head—including the bit—can be unclipped from the halter portion. This allows the horse to be quickly converted from bridled to haltered when coming into checkpoints, strapping areas and vet gates.

The Trekker Bridle takes a simpler approach. The bridle itself remains on the horse and only the bit is removed.

For riders who don't necessarily need to completely strip their horse back to a halter during a ride, but still want the convenience of quickly removing the bit, it's a beautifully straightforward solution.

Made for Trail Riders

The Trekker really comes into its own when you're spending hours out exploring. Imagine you've been riding all morning and stop somewhere shady for lunch. Your horse is ready for a drink and there's some grass available while you take a break. Rather than taking the bridle off—or leaving your horse standing around with a bit in their mouth—you can simply unclip the bit. Your horse gets a proper break, while you still have practical headgear in place for handling them.

When it's time to head home, clipping the bit back on takes moments. It's one of those features that might not sound revolutionary in the tack room, but makes a great deal of sense once you're kilometres from home.

Handy for Training Too

You certainly don't need to be heading off on an all-day trail ride to appreciate the Trekker. It's equally useful for training rides, pleasure riding and everyday adventures. If you're regularly stopping to let your horse graze, you're riding with friends and take long breaks, or you simply prefer being able to remove the bit easily when you've finished riding, the Trekker gives you that flexibility without requiring separate pieces of headgear.

It's uncomplicated tack designed around what riders actually do with their horses.

The Practicality of Biothane

Of course, we've paired that practical design with one of our favourite materials: Biothane. Trail riding has a habit of taking you through everything from dust and mud to long grass, rain and creek crossings.

Biothane doesn't mind.

After a particularly adventurous day, there's no need to spend the evening carefully cleaning and conditioning your bridle. Most sweat, dirt and mud can simply be rinsed away with fresh water, with mild soapy water available for anything more stubborn. Rinse it. Hang it up to air dry. Check your hardware. Ready for the next ride.

And Then There's the Fun Part...

Choosing the colours. The Trekker can be practical without being boring. Go traditional with black, brown or navy, choose something that complements your horse, match your existing saddlecloth and riding gear—or embrace the full Biothane rainbow.

One colour or two, subtle or bright, the colour combination is an opportunity to make your Trekker distinctly yours.

Which One Is Right for You?

If you're deciding between our two designs, the easiest way to think about it is:

Endure Bridle: the bridle head and bit clip off, leaving the halter.

Trekker Bridle: the bit itself clips off, while the bridle remains on the horse.

For competition endurance riders who regularly need to transition quickly between riding, strapping and vetting, the Endure's removable bridle head offers a particularly practical solution.

For trail and pleasure riders who simply want to give their horse a break from the bit without taking off their headgear, the Trekker offers a wonderfully simple alternative.

Different designs for different riders—but the same philosophy behind both:

Make good horse gear practical, easy to use and ready for wherever the next ride takes you.
