How to Clean Biothane Horse Gear: Quick, Easy & Mud-Proof

If you ride endurance, trail ride, train in all weather or simply own a horse with a talent for finding the muddiest patch in the paddock, keeping tack clean can feel like a never-ending job.

One of the biggest advantages of Biothane horse gear is just how easy it is to look after. Unlike leather, it doesn’t need regular oiling or conditioning, and everyday dirt, sweat and grime can usually be removed in a matter of minutes.

Here’s how to keep your Biothane tack looking its best.

Everyday Cleaning

For normal dust, sweat and light dirt, you really don't need anything complicated.

Simply rinse your Biothane gear with clean water or wipe it over with a damp cloth. For slightly dirtier gear, add a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid or gentle soap and wipe it down with a soft sponge or cloth.

Rinse away any soap residue and hang the gear somewhere to dry.

That's it. No saddle soap. No leather conditioner. No hours spent polishing tack.

When Things Get Really Muddy

We all know the kind of ride.

You come back with mud on the horse, mud on the tack, mud on yourself and somehow mud inside the float.

Fortunately, Biothane handles this particularly well.

Allow heavy mud to soften under running water, then use a soft brush, sponge or cloth with warm soapy water to loosen stubborn dirt. Pay particular attention to areas around buckles, keepers, rings and fittings where dirt can accumulate.

Once clean, rinse thoroughly and allow it to air dry.

Avoid using abrasive scourers, which can unnecessarily scratch or dull the surface.

After particularly sweaty rides—or rides involving rain, mud, creek crossings or salty conditions—rinse the buckles, rings and clips with fresh water as well.

Give your gear a quick inspection while you're cleaning it. Check stitching, buckles, clips and attachment points for wear or damage.
